- High Performance Web Sites :: Google Analytics goes async stevesouders.com
It’s extremely cool to see this pattern being evangelized for such a major piece of the Internet.
- minify - Project Hosting on Google Code code.google.com
"A PHP5 app that helps you follow several of Yahoo!'s Rules for High Performance Web Sites. It combines multiple CSS or Javascript files, removes unnecessary whitespace and comments, and serves them with gzip encoding and optimal client-side cache headers." Hubba, hubba.
- LABjs: new hotness for script loading | getiblog blog.getify.com
"A general purpose script loader that aims to be able to effectively load any script resource(s), from any location, into any page, at any time. It loads them all as parallel as the browser will allow, but maintains execution order when you express the need to do so in the usage of the API, for keeping dependencies safe." Very pleased this has gone 1.0.
- WordPress Super Cache ocaoimh.ie
"An HTTP viewer and debugger that integrates with IE and Firefox to provide seamless HTTP and HTTPS monitoring without leaving the browser window." Win only, basic (free) and pro (pay) versions.
- High Performance Web Sites :: @font-face and performance stevesouders.com
Ouch. "My first piece of advice is to avoid using @font-face unless it’s critical to the page. The primary reason for this advice is that font files block rendering of the entire page in IE until they’re done downloading. Stylesheets also have this problem. But stylesheets provide styling for all aspects of the entire page, whereas font files only add one thing - a custom font."
- High Performance Web Sites :: Business impact of high performance stevesouders.com
"How big an impact does performance optimization have on the business metrics of a typical media or e-commerce site?" Potentially quite a lot, which is why we keep banging on about it.
- svg-icon-loader code.google.com
Provides a method for a web interface to use SVG images as icons, while being loaded from a single file. This reduces the amount of HTTP requests, offering the same kind of benefit available with CSS sprites.

- High Performance Web Sites :: Aptimize: realtime spriting and more stevesouders.com
As well as realtime spriting, Aptimize are using data: URIs in their Website Accelerator tool and doing so for >IE7 using an MHTML workaround. Clever.

Lots of caveats but useful under certain circumstances.
- High Performance Web Sites :: Mobile Gmail and async script loading stevesouders.com
With mobile on my mind, I was blown away by the awesome performance tips in this blog post: Gmail for Mobile HTML5 Series: Reducing Startup Latency. This post hits on the main point of my recent book - the impact of loading JavaScript. This is the #1 performance issue for today’s web apps.

- High Performance Web Sites :: SpriteMe makes spriting easy stevesouders.com
The bigger challenges when creating sprites are finding the background images and knowing how to group them into sprites. Once the sprite image is created, testing the sprite, including changing all the CSS, is time consuming. SpriteMe addresses all of these challenges.

A hybrid web application/testing harness that automatically runs YSlow on a suite of pages of the user’s choosing at scheduled times, stores these results, and provides a host of graphs and other data concerning the results of these tests.
- OmniTI ~ YSlow! to YFast! in 45 minutes. omniti.com
While OmniTI has enormous breadth in the Internet space, we are primarily known as an Internet performance and scalability company. This made the fact that we received an F on YSlow! all the more embarrassing. This was a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing — something we evangelize against. I decided that I would fix that and aim to do it by the end of Steve’s presentation. A play-by-play follows.
- High Performance Web Sites :: Wikia: fast pages retain users stevesouders.com
Wikia measures exit rate - the percentage of users that leave the site from a given page. Here they show that exit rate drops as pages get faster. The exit rate goes from ~15% for a 2 second page to ~10% for a 1 second page. This is another data point to add to the list of stats from Velocity that show that faster pages is not only better for users, it’s better for business.
- web-optimizator - Project Hosting on Google Code code.google.com
Does about a billion things to optimize sites. Tempting but not sure how much I'd trust this; feels like a sledgehammer option.
"Web Workers allow you to run JavaScript in parallel on a web page, without blocking the user interface." Mmm, cool.
- Website performance Q&A with Steve Souders from Google | Royal Pingdom royal.pingdom.com · Archived on
Statistics from Amazon, Google, Jupiter Research and others show that a faster web site increases traffic, repeat visits, clicks, and conversions. There are two other motivations, in addition to these user metrics, that I give for always working to improve the speed of your web site. First, even if your site is fast enough for some users, there are always other users with slower connections. Mediocre performance in the U.S. means an unbearable experience in other parts of the world. If you hope to attract and retain a global audience, your site has to be blazingly fast under normal conditions so that under degraded conditions it’s still usable.
- Replace document.write using MooTools subtlegradient.com
Maybe you want to use AJAX to load a script that requires the use of document.write. But after teh page has loaded document.write tends to destroy the universe without even asking first! Solution: Replace document.write!
- LABjs (Loading And Blocking JavaScript) labjs.com
"It's like a lot of similar projects where the goal is to improve the speed of page load by allowing scripts to load in parallel. The thing it does slightly differently than most others like it is it allows you to "block", which is to say, load one or more scripts in parallel, then wait for them to finish, before going on to something else, like loading more scripts."

- Paul Buchheit: Make your site faster and cheaper to operate in one easy step paulbuchheit.blogspot.com
Good argument to use for gzip. "Inevitably, someone will argue that they can't spare a few ms per page to compress the data, even though it will make their site much more responsive. However, it occured to me today that thanks to Amazon, it's very easy to compare CPU vs Bandwidth."

When you care about performance, or SEO (or just doing a good job as web dev) an interesting data point is the ratio of page content vs. the markup used to present this content. Or... how much crap we put in HTML in order to present what the users want to see - the content.
- Web Performance Matters - Journal - Acceptable Response Times webperformancematters.com

A few weeks ago we released a version of the Flickr site tailored specifically for the iPhone. Developing this site was very different from any other project I’ve worked on; there seems to be a new set of frontend rules for developing high-end mobile sites. A lot of the current best practices get thrown out the window in the quest for minimum page weight and fastest load times over slow celluar connections.
