#frontend (41 links)
Frontend designers create the HTML, CSS, and presentational JavaScript code that powers web products’ user interfaces. I see frontend design as helpful mortar that bridges the gap between design and development.

Angular and other big-iron web frameworks are not an affront to front-end devs. They are just the latest manifestion of a long-term trend: code moving from the server to the browser. Let's define "front-end" to mean the parts of the app relating to user interface, rather than those that happen to be running in the browser's JavaScript VM. If we assign tasks to our developers accordingly, we will see that the new world of single-page web apps is very much like the old one. Plus ça change...

I think we’re seeing the emphasis shift from valuing trivia to valuing tools. There’s a new set of baseline skills required in order to be successful as a front-end developer, and developers who don’t meet this baseline are going to start feeling more and more left behind as those who are sharing their knowledge start to assume that certain things go without saying.

- Why front-end developers are so important to the future of businesses on the web - paulcarvill.com paulcarvill.com · Archived on
"A [front end developer] is responsible for everything that sits on the client side of the web stack — the content, presentation and behaviour layers. Few other roles touch so many other key aspects of a business as does a [front end developer]’s." Amen to that.
"With limited influence, unlimited hands in the pie, a low barrier to critique, and the perception of triviality, frontend engineers are the janitors of software development. Rather than cleaning up trash, the boulder they toil beneath is skew: the distance between team member's conceptions of a project." Pies, pies, the sky is all pies.

You think of people who do know CSS as designers, not giving any credit to the engineering prowess required to tame the stylesheet of a multinational corporation because (self-taught as they are) most true front-end gurus don’t speak the same language as you do. Their skill appears to be a black-art, some kind of magic, or internalized instinct for browser flaws. This is your guess anyway, because you simply can’t communicate with them.
