- The Organization Is the Bottleneck oreilly.com
An agent with access to your codebase and no constraints is an autonomous team with no guardrails: it will move fast, but not necessarily in the right direction. If you’ve already built those guardrails for your teams—coding standards enforced in CI, architectural decision records, templates for new services—you have a serious head start because those same artifacts become the constraints that keep agents on track.

As we dive deeper into visual regression testing in our development workflow we realize a sad truth: on average, we break our own CSS every week and a half.…

In September I was introduced to Codeship at a presentation by Paul Love. These are some of the learnings I have from using their hosted service primarily for Continuous Integration for the last couple of weeks on a client project.

We’ve found that one of the easiest ways to allow people to change the database is by using version-controlled SQL delta scripts. We’ve also found it beneficial to ensure that the scripts used to build development environments are the exact same used in QA, UAT and production. Maintaining and making use of these deltas can quickly become a significant overhead – dbdeploy aims to address this.
- Code as Craft » Quantum of Deployment codeascraft.etsy.com
"Having a reliable and easy deployment should be non-negotiable. It’s a metric I’ve come to call the “quantum of deployment”: what’s the smallest number of steps, with the smallest number of people and the smallest amount of ceremony required to get new code running on your servers? This isn’t a trivial question." Great deployment stuff from Etsy.

Early days but looks promising. "I have decided to use cpython as platform, django as web framework for the server and Fabric as library to automate the task execution."
Aims to provide an easy to setup continuous integration server and client. The server side infrastructure is built on top of django. The tasks are described using fabric.

- Emergent Properties of Continual Automation « Timothy Fitz timothyfitz.wordpress.com
Once a task has been automated to take dramatically less time, a threshold is crossed and at which point you can exploit emergent properties. Or in other words, crazy-ass improvements.
A system to automate the compile/test cycle required by most software projects to validate code changes. By automatically rebuilding and testing the tree each time something has changed, build problems are pinpointed quickly, before other developers are inconvenienced by the failure. The guilty developer can be identified and harassed without human intervention.

"The high level of our process is dead simple: Continuously integrate (commit early and often). On commit automatically run all tests. If the tests pass deploy to the cluster. If the deploy succeeds, repeat." Blimey.
