- Deploy Java Apps With Docker = Awesome | Atlassian Blogs blogs.atlassian.com
Docker provides a streamlined user interface and API over the very cool lxc (Linux Containers) and aufs (advanced multi layered unification filesystem) to configure, spin up, down, set and replay light weight vm-like containers.
More for the Docker than the Java.
Using containers is a bit like trying to use git using only commands like update-index and read-tree, without familiar tools like add, commit and merge. Docker provides that layer of “porcelain” for LXC, turning containers into something that are much easier to think about, manipulate and distribute.
The whole point is portability. I can create a docker image in then push it out to run on Amazon EC2 or on any Linux machine running docker.

- Virtualised Development Environments on a Mac - Nefarious Designs nefariousdesigns.co.uk
The best solution would be to build linked clones. A linked clone is a copy of a virtual machine that shares virtual disks with the parent virtual machine in an ongoing manner. This conserves disk space, and allows multiple virtual machines to use the same software installation. It also means we’ll be able to run the two VMs simultaneously.

- dbdeploy.com dbdeploy.com
We’ve found that one of the easiest ways to allow people to change the database is by using version-controlled SQL delta scripts. We’ve also found it beneficial to ensure that the scripts used to build development environments are the exact same used in QA, UAT and production. Maintaining and making use of these deltas can quickly become a significant overhead – dbdeploy aims to address this.

- Code as Craft » Quantum of Deployment codeascraft.etsy.com
"Having a reliable and easy deployment should be non-negotiable. It’s a metric I’ve come to call the “quantum of deployment”: what’s the smallest number of steps, with the smallest number of people and the smallest amount of ceremony required to get new code running on your servers? This isn’t a trivial question." Great deployment stuff from Etsy.

All deployments need to be automated. No ad-hoc, one-off deployments allowed. If you do allow them, they can quickly snowball into an unmaintainable, unreproducible mess.
