- Migrations: the sole scalable fix to tech debt. lethain.com
A considered approach to fixing tech debt by migrating to new systems.

Decoherence grows relative to the rate of change of a system, and it increases faster the more decoherent a system is, resulting in runaway exponential growth. It is not a new phenomenon, and humans have always countered it through carefully finding ways to do more with less, unifying disparate patterns and models into a cohesive whole. However, the widespread use of AI is currently producing it at a rate that is unsustainable.
- What Even Is An OS Now? — A Final Ward sockpuppet.org
We’re building a phone that isn’t designed to run fixed-function applications. I doubt anyone will ever get up on a stage and show off a AAA mobile game (that nobody plays) on it. It’s not for TikTok and short-form video, though I guess you can ask it for that. You can ask it for whatever: it’ll build apps for you, on the phone, whenever you want.

The focus on more gets in the way of increasing value. Increasing pressure to do more almost inevitably has a bad result: the team tries to go faster, and wind up skimping on code quality and on tests. They soon begin shipping more defects, slowing down because of the increased rework to fix the defects, and slowing down even more because the code quality rapidly declines. Things get worse and worse, pressure increases, and it becomes a race to disaster.

This is a slightly problematic article, but worth noting: so few people write about the complexity of UI in a useful way. Organisations too often treat visual design as being as good as done, missing all the nuance behind great UI.
We're building a new platform to allow fans to connect with, and financially support their favourite musicians. It will be 100% run by and for the benefit of musicians, fans and the people who make it. A platform co-operative.

- Optimizing for Taste cra.mr
There are many, many reasons I am opposed, but the one we should care about is how it fosters a culture of decision paralysis. It fosters a culture of decision making without having an opinion, without having to put a stake in the ground. It fosters a culture where making a quick buck trumps a great product experience.

Monolithic applications can be successful, but increasingly people are feeling frustrations with them - especially as more applications are being deployed to the cloud . Change cycles are tied together - a change made to a small part of the application, requires the entire monolith to be rebuilt and deployed. Over time it's often hard to keep a good modular structure, making it harder to keep changes that ought to only affect one module within that module. Scaling requires scaling of the entire application rather than parts of it that require greater resource.

- maetl . code is not inevitable maetl.net
"The distinction between good code and crap code is essentially literary. Good code emerges from an intuitive ability to separate structure from intention – to compose minimalist flows of well formed cues that balance direct statements of logic with modular flexibility. Holistic, pattern based thinking is important, treating the locality of a single statement in the context of its position in a larger system, and also understanding that this position is fluid, and may change as the system changes and grows." This is great.

- Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule paulgraham.com
When you're operating on the maker's schedule, meetings are a disaster. A single meeting can blow a whole afternoon, by breaking it into two pieces each too small to do anything hard in. Plus you have to remember to go to the meeting. That's no problem for someone on the manager's schedule. There's always something coming on the next hour; the only question is what. But when someone on the maker's schedule has a meeting, they have to think about it.
