How do we make libraries that agents love?
- Nobody Gets Promoted for Simplicity terriblesoftware.org
I think there’s something quietly screwing up a lot of engineering teams. In interviews, in promotion packets, in design reviews: the engineer who overbuilds gets a compelling narrative, but the one who ships the simplest thing that works gets… nothing.

- Impossible Components — overreacted overreacted.io
What we need are the tools that let us compose across the stack. Then we can create self-contained LEGO blocks that run where appropriate—and snap them together. Any piece of UI can have its own backend needs and frontend needs. It’s time that our tools acknowledge that, embrace that, and let us speak our users’ language.

This is a slightly problematic article, but worth noting: so few people write about the complexity of UI in a useful way. Organisations too often treat visual design as being as good as done, missing all the nuance behind great UI.
The depressing reality of what has happened here becomes all the more stark when you look across the river. Right opposite the power station stands Churchill Gardens, a vast postwar housing estate designed by distinguished architects Powell and Moya, built to house 5,000 people across a 12-hectare site, with several blocks now listed and around half still council-owned. Built by Westminster City Council, it was designed to accommodate a balanced cross-section of society, with the highest standards of housing for all – and not a segregated entrance in sight.
- Why Is Everything So Ugly? | The Editors nplusonemag.com
We live in undeniably ugly times. Architecture, industrial design, cinematography, probiotic soda branding — many of the defining features of the visual field aren’t sending their best. Despite more advanced manufacturing and design technologies than have existed in human history, our built environment tends overwhelmingly toward the insubstantial, the flat, and the gray, punctuated here and there by the occasional childish squiggle. This drab sublime unites flat-pack furniture and home electronics, municipal infrastructure and commercial graphic design: an ocean of stuff so homogenous and underthought that the world it has inundated can feel like a digital rendering — of a slightly duller, worse world.
- The crass, ad-laden reinvention of central London theguardian.com
Outernet boasts of being “the world’s foremost bridge between the real world and the digital world”, a place where the metaverse meets meatspace, where virtual luxury trainers can be sold as NFTs alongside the real thing. There are plans for it to grow into a worldwide network of 10 connected hubs, with New York and Los Angeles next on the list. But it shows what happens when urban development is conceived in the same way as making a website or running a TV channel – “curating a brand neighbourhood,” as O’Ferrall puts it. Pings, clicks and content trump human experience, until advertising swallows the city whole.

- Islands Architecture jasonformat.com
The general idea of an “Islands” architecture is deceptively simple: render HTML pages on the server, and inject placeholders or slots around highly dynamic regions. These placeholders/slots contain the server-rendered HTML output from their corresponding widget. They denote regions that can then be "hydrated" on the client into small self-contained widgets, reusing their server-rendered initial HTML.
Good name for it.

you shouldn't start a new project with microservices, even if you're sure your application will be big enough to make it worthwhile.

During test-driven development we write tests to verify that features conform to desired business outcomes; with fitness function-driven development we can also write tests that measure a system’s alignment to architectural goals.

- Design Docs at Google industrialempathy.com
One of the key elements of Google's software engineering culture is the use of defining software designs through design docs. These are relatively informal documents that the primary author or authors of a software system or application create before they embark on the coding project. The design doc documents the high level implementation strategy and key design decisions with emphasis on the trade-offs that were considered during those decisions.

Monolithic applications can be successful, but increasingly people are feeling frustrations with them - especially as more applications are being deployed to the cloud . Change cycles are tied together - a change made to a small part of the application, requires the entire monolith to be rebuilt and deployed. Over time it's often hard to keep a good modular structure, making it harder to keep changes that ought to only affect one module within that module. Scaling requires scaling of the entire application rather than parts of it that require greater resource.
Does the BBC treasure him? Does it understand the talent it has in its possession? "I don't really think so, no. They don't always say yes. If I say I want to do four hours about brutalism, they'll give me two. The last film we had to do in just 19 days. You can't do any fancy set-ups: no cranes, no dollies. It's not slavery, obviously, but it's much more difficult than it used to be. My subjects are regarded as minoritarian and that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. On BBC2, I used to get 2.5 million to 3 million viewers; now I get a tenth of that on BBC4."

This summer, on a Southwark playground in the heart of London, award-winning Berlin-based architects Köbberling and Kaltwasser will work alongside volunteers to create The Jellyfish Theatre, London’s first fully-functioning theatre made entirely from recycled and reclaimed materials.
The V&A will be staging a contemporary architecture exhibition in June 2010 exploring the power of small spaces. A number of international architects have been asked to design structures which explore notions of refuge and 'retreat'. These buildings which examine themes such as play, work, performance and study will be built at full-scale in various spaces within the V&A.
