- Will Self: Walking is political | Books | The Guardian guardian.co.uk
"Year on year, the number of journeys taken on foot declines – indeed, on current projections walking will have died out altogether as a means of transport by the middle of this century. No longer subjected to the measure of man – or woman – or her oversight, the city has already acquired distorted lineaments: vastly extended thoroughfares are lined by cul-de-sacs, while the architecture defined by Rem Koolhaas as "junkspace" presumes that only a corridor can be a viable destination – especially if it has a cash machine."
- Why People in Cities Walk Fast - Jobs & Economy - The Atlantic Cities theatlanticcities.com · Archived on
"With the exception of Nairobi — insert joke here about Kenyans crushing everyone at the New York City Marathon — the fastest walking cities were from wealthy nations. The statistical analysis confirmed this general perception: two of the three strongest social predictors of walking speed were a country's G.D.P. and its purchasing power parity (the other was its individualism). Indeed, when Levine considered all his "pace of life" metrics, he found that pace of life was swifter in "economically productive countries" like Western Europe and Japan than in undeveloped countries."
- Barefoot running: bare your sole | Sport | The Observer guardian.co.uk
"I asked Galahad Clark, the brand's creator, if he thinks the general public's shoe-coddled feet will be able to handle running with such little support. "Yes," says Clark, "but it will be a big transition for people accustomed to wearing highly cushioned, inflexible shoes. The foot muscles are weak and need to time to adjust." Not such a bad thing, he believes. "Trainers artificially allow unfit people to run longer than their bodies are conditioned for. It's rather like hitting yourself over the head while wearing a crash helmet: it might not hurt immediately but the long-term harm is obvious."

- Tom Roper's Weblog: North doesn't matter roper.org.uk
The Legible London project began in 2003 as an initial study working with the central London boroughs and business fora, aiming not just to improve signs, but to offer far better guidance for walkers. The project was to run a prototype, a measurable trial to prove the concept. They set about developing a taxonomy of walkers, but when they had discovered sixty different types and were still counting they gave up, and instead measured walking activity along two axes, the walkers' knowledge of the area and their speed, defined on a continuum from strolling to striding.
