Interesting. Not so much for the hash-bangs, but more for the bit that goes: "This is the crux. We might all be using web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS and the like), but in radically different architectural configurations, and best practices for some may not be good rules for others. What this touches on might be the primary root cause of the hashbang debate (if not also others): the web is being used in challenging and unexpected ways and we’re finding it hard to re-examine practices and principles that were intended for a different age."

The most brittle part of the [front-end] stack is JavaScript [...]<br /> That’s why I’m so surprised that any front-end engineer would knowingly choose to swap out a solid declarative foundation like HTML for a more brittle scripting language.

Head -> desk. "Gawker/Lifehacker have violated the principle of progressive enhancement, and they paid for it immediately with an extended outage on day one of their new site launch. Every JavaScript hiccup will cause an outage, and directly affect Gawker’s revenue stream and the trust of their audience."

"This new feature offers you a way to change the URL displayed in the browser* through javascript without reloading the page. It will also create a back-button event and you even have a state object you can interact with. This means you won’t have to use the hash-hack anymore if you want add state to your AJAX-application, and search engines will be able to index your pages too." Not IE, of course.

- YouTube API Blog: Upcoming Change to YouTube Video Page URLs apiblog.youtube.com
The ? character in the URL will be replaced with #! characters. Not all users will be directed to the new URLs, and the change will be implemented gradually over time. This change is part of a larger AJAX rewrite of the YouTube web site. The old-format URLs will continue working indefinitely when used for browser navigation, so if your web site has existing links to YouTube video pages, you don't need to worry about them breaking.

RevCanonical is url shortening with a twist. Instead of creating its own super short versions of links, it checks to see if the link owner has published a shortened version of the given page using HTML link element. If not, we just return the original URL. And you should bug the link owner about providing a better alternative.

[Matt Cutts] generally uses descriptive titles for blog posts but his URLs are short, neatly written and use only relevant keywords.
If however, you start off by thinking about web pages, site maps, left hand navigations and visual design you will very quickly photoshop yourself into a corner. You will find it difficult to create a web of data.

URL design is arguably one of the most important areas of website developement. Not only do URLs generally have huge visual priority in web browsers but they’re also shown on search result listings and get used for matching search terms.
- Why you should be using disambiguated URLs simonwillison.net
There’s one aspect of URL design that is often ignored. Good URLs should be unambiguous. By that, I mean that any logical piece of content should have one and only one definitive URL, with any alternatives acting as a permanent redirect.
