- Pluralistic: Sympathy for the spammer (15 Jan 2024) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow pluralistic.net
This is absolutely classic passive-income brainworms thinking. "I have a bot that can turn out plausible sentences. I will locate places where sentences can be exchanged for money, aim my bot at it, sit back, and count my winnings." It's MBA logic on meth: find a thing people pay for, then, without bothering to understand why they pay for that thing, find a way to generate something like it at scale and bombard them with it.
When you can only have 1% of your list unsubscribe, it means that you cannot use a service like MailChimp to clean up your list. They will shut your ass down, hard. You’ll get one warning, and that’s it.
- KrazyDad » Blog Archive » Mayor of the North Pole krazydad.com
Last Sunday, while checking into the Hill Street Cafe in Burbank using the foursquare iPhone app, I idly wondered, “Can I become the mayor of the North Pole?” So I tried checking into a nearby 7-Eleven. It worked. I tried the Griffith Observatory about 5 miles away. It worked. I tried Disneyland, which is about an hour away. It didn’t work, but I now had an afternoon hacking project.
- Give me ad-free conversations, or give me death (please RT) techcrunch.com
Human conversation is the last area of communication to hold out against the relentless march of commercialisation and it’s our duty, as humans, to make sure it stays that way. So, screw consensus. And shame on me for starting to lean towards it yesterday. Give me ad-free conversation, or give me death.

- Light pollution is complicated part 2 (or okay, do blame it on the lighting designer) - Headlessness headlessness.com
What if there was some shift in emphasis from designing for the building, to designing for the community, or the wider urban space? If everyone could agree just to turn the lighting down a bit, or even a lot, night-time city centres could become much less competitive, noisy places in terms of ambient light.
- Chris Heathcote: anti-mega: screens in context anti-mega.com
Whilst the advertising industry has one of the longest histories of trying to understand interaction, it’s a very different set of tools that digitalness brings; ones that designers at the coal face of web and mobile encounter every day. Everything can be considered in context, be timely, reactive, and data-driven. I’m going to try to outline some dimensions to think about, with some incredibly quick, simple, off the cuff dumb ideas (All brands are impersonated. Badly.) that hopefully push the advertising into being more useful or interesting.

Marketers are responsible for any unsolicited marketing messages they send which do not comply with data protection rules. Guidance issued by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) stresses that the customer who passes a friend's details to the advertiser must confirm that they obtained the friend's consent. Marketers should check the friend is not already on a marketing suppression list and should tell customers that they will tell the friend how their contact details were obtained. If the friend objects having received the message, the marketer must rapidly suppress his contact details.
Interesting. Hadn't considered the possible legal implications of 'send to a friend' before.
