- The profitable startup - Linear Blog linear.app
Profitability isn't unambitious; it's controlling your own destiny. It means you don't have to rely on investors for survival. It means you can focus on your unaltered vision and mission. And it means you as a founder decide the pace of growth. And once you experience it, it's hard to imagine doing things any other way.

Trying to imagine a tech conference that would embody an alternative viewpoint — a more “socialist / social democratic” alternative — actually seems like a good way in. I don’t have to imagine a whole new society and economic model, but only try to imagine what kinds of topics might be talked about at a conference along those lines. Some topics I quickly wrote down...

Backends can be built with/without the use of service providers that provide already built functions. While some startups have the resources to take on such a bold undertaking, many of them are often dealing with scarce resources. To this end, building a backend with the use of service providers (referred to Backend as a Service) saves both time and money.

If you aren’t going to be satisfied with anything less than being a multi-millionaire living in a hollowed out volcano, then an all-or-nothing, VC-backed start-up crap shoot is probably your only option. And there are markets where you have very little chance of success without venture capital. But really, how much money do you need? Is money going to make you happy? How many meals can you eat in a day? How many cars can you drive?
- Thoreau 2.0 - XOXO Conference Talk static.pinboard.in
I've come to believe that it's time for us to take a stand, and refuse to cooperate with this apparatus of secrecy. We've already seen Lavabit, in an act of great moral courage, throw away ten years of hard work rather than acquiesce to blanket monitoring of its users. But the fact that Ladar Levinson wasn't even able to give the reasons for shutting his project down, that we had to infer them from his silence, demonstrates the problem.

The spectre of competition means that at work, school, everywhere we think we have to work/study/run as fast as we possibly can, all the time. But, says Bjergegaard, much of that is counterproductive. "We get tired, we don't work as well under constant stress. We don't always need to be there anyway – many of my best ideas have come when I'm running, or on holiday."

- Don’t waste your time in crappy startup jobs. « Michael O.Church michaelochurch.wordpress.com
I don’t intend to argue that people shouldn’t join startups. If the offer’s good, and the job looks interesting, it’s worth trying out. I just don’t think that the current, unconditional “startups are awesome!” mentality serves us well. It’s not good for any of us, because there’s no tyrant worse than a peer selling himself short, and right now there are a lot of great people selling themselves very short for a shot at the “startup experience”– whatever that is.
