- The Imperfectionist: Act fast ckarchive.com
There’s a piece of advice I still struggle with, but that I’m more and more convinced lies at the heart of meaningful productivity, successful creative work, and a more vibrant life in general. That advice is: act fast. Move quickly. When you get a good idea, make it your default policy to put it into practice as soon as you reasonably can.
One of the best articles I've read so far this year.
My definition of a good solution to a complex problem is one that solves the immediate problem, is built to last and generates more potential than it uses.
The more I think about complex problems, the more I get convinced that the built to last part is critical. Almost all failures are caused by not aiming for durability.
Sentiment building. "We're now at the stage where we should be getting the next wave of disruptive surprises. But – guess what? – they're nowhere to be seen. Instead, we're getting an endless stream of incremental changes and me-tooism. If I see one more proposal for a photo-sharing or location-based web service, anything with "app" in it, or anything that invites me to "rate" something, I'll scream."
- A slow savings account ( 4 Apr., 2012, at Interconnected) interconnected.org
"A slow savings account would work exactly like a regular account -- I could pay money into it, and transfer money out. The difference would be: when I pay money in to a slow savings account, it appears in the available balance exactly one year later." I want one of these.
"Send in your child's drawing - one that they drew and coloured and Child's Own Studio will handcraft a unique stuffed toy, to be cherished for a lifetime." Nice idea.

Wondering why I didn't save this in 2008. Keep referring to it.
- Commonplace book - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org
Such books were essentially scrapbooks filled with items of every kind: medical recipes, quotes, letters, poems, tables of weights and measures, proverbs, prayers, legal formulas. Commonplaces were used by readers, writers, students, and humanists as an aid for remembering useful concepts or facts they had learned. Each commonplace book was unique to its creator's particular interests.
Rather nice.
- Proximity for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store itunes.apple.com
"Proximity is a location-based alarm that allows you to set *where* you want to wake up, as opposed to *when*." Close, but would like to see something a little more general that could trigger a range of actions depending on location.
Much more beyond this quote... "When you actually need to travel, your personal devices will keep you on track. For example something the “JITwatch“, or that iPhone app that triggers an alarm when GPS indicates you’re within a particular distance from your destination."... but everything has been done already.

- Organic Startup Ideas paulgraham.com
The best way to come up with startup ideas is to ask yourself the question: what do you wish someone would make for you?
"How about you make something that would take away that hassle, but still let us send postcards to the people we love - printed objects that would arrive through the letterbox and make those people smile? Hmm?" Please do this, Royal Mail. Or someone else?

At no. 1, "Max Tundra’s Limited Edition Kosher Chicken Soup". Ah, Ben.

Is there potential for buildings to be less good at keeping us warm, or cool, or dry than they are now? You know, for environmental reasons.

They don't seem to be precious about ideas. They don't cherish them, regard them as valuable or hard to have. They have lots and lots of them and then prune, recombine and mutate. He talked about this as 'excess and selection'. You have an excess of ideas and then pick the ones that seem to fit the problem. (And you keep them all, because they might come in handy next time.)
A collection of 51 cards representing diverse ways that design teams can understand the people they are designing for. They are used to make a number of different methods accessible to all members of a design team, to explain how and when the methods are best used, and to demonstrate how they have been applied to real design projects.
Clever clever. Nice detail.

Interesting2007 was a conference that happened on the 15th June at the Conway Hall, London. This site isn't so much an archive of the event as a collation of the traces and remains it's left scattered over the internet.

Have an efficient filing system for your rejected work, because a lot of briefs come up time and time again (this product is simple to use, this product is inexpensive, or in the case of Cadbury's - this product will make you happy).

"Just forward your travel confirmation emails to: [email protected]." Clever clever.
Idea generation is an addiction... an engaging, brain-spinning indulgence that must be practiced in moderation.
- rude words from 1811 (8 January, 2008, Interconnected) interconnected.org
I find that certain mental states are good for certain tasks. No caffeine is good for doing my taxes, running and washing up. Walking with no music and being in the shower is good for insights into problems.
