- Own Your Web – Issue 18: Curators newsletter.ownyourweb.site
The link – the Web’s most fundamental building block, the thing that connects one human’s work to another’s – is quietly being erased from the experience of finding things online. The search engine no longer says “here, go read what this person wrote.” It now says “here, I’ve already read it for you.” The contract is broken.
So what becomes valuable, in a world like this? Not more content. We are drowning in content. What becomes valuable is someone you trust, saying: This is worth your time. Here’s why.
- Scotland just showed us how to keep wealth in local communities. betterfuturemedia.substack.com
A new Scottish law will quietly shift how wealth circulates – and who actually benefits from economic growth.
- A new kind of gentrification is spreading through London – and emptying out schools | Anna Minton | The Guardian theguardian.com
The positive rhetoric and branding of placemaking is that it transforms run-down areas into vibrant and economically successful parts of the city. The reality is that it creates sterile places, emptied of so many of the essential aspects of urban life, except the expensive activities. The city may be emptier than ever of children and families, but tables at sought-after restaurants are still booked up weeks in advance.

There are six core needs researchers find are important for humans (both at work and in our personal lives). Each of us have a personal hierarchy for the six however: You might find that equity and belonging are most important to you, but choice and status are most important to your employee, your partner, your child. Getting to know them is a shortcut to better communication, as well as greater inclusivity at work.

- RxC QV quadraticvote.radicalxchange.org
Quadratic Voting is the mathematically optimal way to vote in a democratic community. Vote through collective decision-making, by allocating votes that express the degree of your preferences, not just direction.
In the conventional survey, people tended to gravitate to one end of the scale or the other. They expressed strong approval or disapproval, just as online reviewers tend to give five stars or none. In both cases, a strong statement costs nothing. In the quadratic poll, people faced a constraint. Expressing vehemence on one issue required them to weaken their stand on another. This constraint forced them to be more discerning about their passions.
- The continuing rise of private virtual neighbourhoods (Interconnected) interconnected.org
Perhaps what we’re seeing is the disentangling of social media back into social and media: newsletters and podcasts are best understood as being part of the media spectrum, even if many of them are smaller and have community spaces attached. And Discord space, Slack spaces, etc, these virtual neighbourhoods are pure social.
To engage readers, build community, and strengthen journalism, Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform will be integrated across washingtonpost.com this…

"Mark Dwight, who started SFMade in 2010, explains, “For decades we have developed a culture of disposability — from consumer goods to medical instruments and machine tools. To fuel economic growth, marketers replaced longevity with planned obsolescence — and our mastery of technology has given birth to ever-accelerating unplanned obsolescence. I think there is increasing awareness that this is no longer sustainable on the scale we have developed.”

"Part of the predicate for forks being so disruptive was the idea that there is One True Version — a creation, like a piece of software, a written work, or anything else, that can only be accurately represented by a single ideal expression [...] Until a git named Linus changed that." Worth poking through the comments.

- Microloans in Hackney | Feature | Society | The Observer guardian.co.uk
When you start dealing with people with unpredictable lifestyles and with income that might be variable month by month, you can't just use the same computerised systems of default and interest that you use for people in regular salaried employment. Muhammad Yunus's microfinance model, which operated in parts of the world where everyone's lifestyle was precarious, had shown that. You had to know exactly who you were lending to, and establish more intimate and flexible models based on that knowledge.

Twitter is becoming an ever present backchannel at conferences and events. However sometimes it needs curating and moderating, especially if it's to be displayed large as a part of the event. Here we talk about an app built in a few hours and open sourced today which we used for this purpose for The Guardian's Activate Summit.
- Tools of Engagement: The New Practice of User-Centered Design, by Robert Fabricant - Core77 core77.com
We have been operating under the assumption that the primary challenge is to convince businesses to focus on fulfilling user needs with higher quality products, with more meaningful experiences. But what if the 'users' themselves are the problem? What if users represent not a coherent set of needs but a messy mix of desires and influences? What, ultimately, is the role of the designer in sorting through these desires to determine which should drive our design decisions? And what frameworks, other than intuition, should we use to make these judgments?

"Over the past 2 months the city government, in cooperation with business groups and non-profits, has turned a corner of one of the busiest intersections in San Francisco into a public plaza. The 17th Street Plaza project took 72-hours to implement, and is carefully called a “reversible trial.” Like the phrase “reversible pilot”.

"What I like about the term webmaster is that it implies that one person is the big boss. The master of the site. The person who speaks with the voice of the machine. When you come across a brilliant site it so often feels like it comes through one person. Or at least there’s a very strong sense of singularity in the way it’s written and presented." I always wanted to be a webmaster.
The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, which will publish the “Social Media Futures” report compiled by Future Foundation next week, has warned that advertising agencies face growth of just 1.2 per cent a year by 2016 if the industry fails to tackle the changes to the media created by sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
- The forecast for 2009: Mobile is the key, says Goldmund Byrne of The Sun | Media | guardian.co.uk guardian.co.uk
"An increasing number of mobiles are coming with flat-rate data access as standard. Remember how much more eagerly we used the net when we stopped paying by the minute? Stop the cost clock and mobile booms. Checking mail, synching calendars. Using geo-tagging and location aware services to see what's cool and nearby for a quick impulse buy." No more in the article than that. Ranty counterpoint in the comments.
The 90-9-1 Principle is an often discussed concept that has been used in countless conversations about online communities and social strategy. Until now, there hasn't been a single collection of description and support for the principle, making it hard to share a single links with clients, colleagues, and friends who haven't heard of 90-9-1. This site works to solve that problem!
