- Don’t waste your time in crappy startup jobs. « Michael O.Church michaelochurch.wordpress.com · Archived on
I don’t intend to argue that people shouldn’t join startups. If the offer’s good, and the job looks interesting, it’s worth trying out. I just don’t think that the current, unconditional “startups are awesome!” mentality serves us well. It’s not good for any of us, because there’s no tyrant worse than a peer selling himself short, and right now there are a lot of great people selling themselves very short for a shot at the “startup experience”– whatever that is.
- The Great Olympic Tax Swindle ethicalconsumer.org
Without these tax sweeteners the IOC would simply take their corporate circus elsewhere and so begins a race to the bottom in a bidding process that echoes the offshore system. New tax rules ushered in as part of the winning Team GB bid include ‘a temporary exemption from UK Corporation Tax and UK Income Tax for certain non-resident companies’.
- Chrome team to Leopard users: no Chrome 22 for you! arstechnica.com
The Chrome team wrote on Monday that Chrome will soon drop support for OS X 10.5 and that future versions will only be available for Snow Leopard (10.6) or higher on the Mac. The version of Chrome that will do this will be Chrome 2,291 22 (more specifically, version 22.0.1201.0), which has just been seeded into the dev channel for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome Frame users.

Standard performance analysis tools like Activity Monitor and top(1) (and any third-party tools based on the same foundation) can’t tell you some key information about activity on your system, such as how much CPU consumption is caused by short-lived processes, or which processes are causing disk I/O. DTrace, however, can see (just about) everything.

- The Skinny on IE's Update Policy « Paul Irish paulirish.com
"The big change is how IE now interacts with Windows Update: Before you had to opt-in to have "Recommended" updates installed automatically. It's likely few folks did. Now, IE upgrades are shipping as "Important" and this class of updates are defaulted to install automatically. A user can still opt-out and immediately after the announcement of this feature they also published details on how enterprises can opt-out. But still, this is a good move, it helps."
- jQuery Blog » jQuery Core: Version 1.9 and Beyond blog.jquery.com
"jQuery 2.0 (early 2013, not long after 1.9): This version will support the same APIs as jQuery 1.9 does, but removes support for IE 6/7/8 oddities such as borked event model, IE7 “attroperties”, HTML5 shims, etc." This is good but I do not look forward to explanation time with clients.

As of jQuery 1.8, you can build a custom version of jQuery that excludes one or more modules if you do not need their functionality. This capability is made easy by our new build system based on Ben Alman’s awesome grunt tool. To build your own custom version, set up a copy of the jQuery core repo from Github and use the grunt command line options to exclude modules.

"It's been spun as "transforming the surrounding area into a vibrant new metropolitan quarter", whereas in reality it's just an aerial sideshow to lure tourists somewhere new. The engineering's an impressive achievement, to be sure, and you'll probably come once for a ride and help make it an overnight success. But Boris's unholy alliance of public money and corporate branding is more about making a statement than fulfilling a need, and hangs uncomfortably across East London's skyline."
