- How to remain secure against NSA surveillance theguardian.com
The NSA has turned the fabric of the internet into a vast surveillance platform, but they are not magical. They're limited by the same economic realities as the rest of us, and our best defense is to make surveillance of us as expensive as possible. Trust the math. Encryption is your friend. Use it well, and do your best to ensure that nothing can compromise it.

- Ideal Postcodes ideal-postcodes.co.uk
A cheap, no-fuss and fast UK postcode lookup API for web and mobile developers. We license Royal Mail's Postcode Address File and make it available to developers at a fair price. One flat price of 2p per postcode lookup.
The people who generate all the ideas and work are evolving and realising that they themselves could be reaping the rewards rather than the agency.
Agencies on the other hand are happy to keep trying to live in a world which is ceasing to exist. Clinging onto the same ideas, tools, and ways of working with CEOs who are either oblivious to the current mindset or too frightened to instigate change. It’s the perfect storm of increasing entrepreneurialism, decreasing loyalty and an industry reveling in mediocrity.
Most "RESTful APIs" make it as far as to the last point but the majority fail the hypermedia constraint. However this is so innate to the architecture that is has its own abbreviation — HATEOAS. It is also what makes RESTful design stand out and be as powerful as it is.

A boilerplate that provides a nice starting point for MongoDB, Node.js, Express, and AngularJS based applications. It is designed to give you quick and organized way to start developing of MEAN based web apps with useful modules like mongoose and passport pre-bundled and configured. We mainly try to take care of the connection points between existing popular frameworks and solve common integration problems.

- The bonnie banks of Loch Lomond by bike theguardian.com
The trail is now almost complete (bar a few final safety checks) and will be opened officially next spring, running for 15 miles from Inversnaid to Aberfoyle. Beyond that, there is a grander plan for a 90-mile east-west path from the start of the Cowal Way in Portavadie to Callander. As yet nameless, it should be finished in 2015 and will make a new alternative to the well-worn West Highland Way, which runs north-south.

- Scotland is going it alone – regardless of the referendum theguardian.com
The more influential ministers in the coalition ache above all to radically challenge the role of the state, to achieve the reverse of the 1945 Labour government. Remarkably, given that they rule in a hung parliament, they have found the space to pursue their radical ambitions. Few in England voted for a revolutionary overhaul of the NHS, the near privatisation of universities, a further decline in the power of local government, a framework for education that paves the way for a return to selection and the introduction of profit-making schools, but that is what they are getting. In their fervent disdain for the state as a mediating agency, ministers focus with special energetic intensity on areas over which they happen to have no powers in Scotland.
As a result Scotland becomes more markedly different than ever. In Scotland the NHS is spared the haphazard revolution in England. The education secretary, Michael Gove, is powerless to impose his resolute will on schools in Scotland and the same applies to his other more evangelical colleagues moving England rightwards. Without doing very much Scotland becomes more different because of what is happening in England. The limited powers handed over to the Scottish parliament are precisely the ones that partly protect it from the ideological mission of the Westminster government.

But Linux on the desktop (or laptop, rather) still sucks.
