- Vibe Driven Development robinrendle.com
It comes down to this annoying, upsetting, stupid fact: the only way to build a great product is to use it every day, to stare at it, to hold it in your hands to feel its lumps. The data and customers will lie to you but the product never will. And most product orgs suck because they simply don’t use the products that they’re building; they ship incremental nothings without direction because they’re looking at spreadsheets all day long filled with junk data nothings.

- Why Is Everything So Ugly? | The Editors nplusonemag.com
We live in undeniably ugly times. Architecture, industrial design, cinematography, probiotic soda branding — many of the defining features of the visual field aren’t sending their best. Despite more advanced manufacturing and design technologies than have existed in human history, our built environment tends overwhelmingly toward the insubstantial, the flat, and the gray, punctuated here and there by the occasional childish squiggle. This drab sublime unites flat-pack furniture and home electronics, municipal infrastructure and commercial graphic design: an ocean of stuff so homogenous and underthought that the world it has inundated can feel like a digital rendering — of a slightly duller, worse world.

For the purposes of the following observations and examples we'll be referring to the grid used for user interface (UI) design to layout a web page or application. This is commonly known as the n-column grid or the n-pixel grid.
So it works out that, yet again, the ecosystem is ready for some pretty big changes to happen to CSS. The engineers at Chrome and across the web platform are prototyping, speccing, and starting the implementation for the next era of responsive design. These updates include user-preference based media features, container queries, and media queries for new screen types, such as foldable screens.

- What is a UI Design Architect? methodbrain.com
The design architect is a champion for human-digital engagement. They have the responsibility to establish a sustainable and equitable balance between a system’s owner and its users with solid workflow and governance practices. And they must care for and find ways to measure and evaluate the health of their digital experience architectures.
- Revisiting Adaptive Design, a lost design movement (Interconnected) interconnected.org
That early work on Adaptive Design has already done the hard digging of finding reference points and developing frameworks to guide product design for adaptation - it’s the anti Apple, the anti Amazon, the anti DRM. I’d love to for designers to share their ideas for future adaptable iPhones and adaptable apps, expand the discourse, and pushing back on the status quo. Adaptive Design is a movement worth reviving in 2020.
Consistency alone can produce consistently poor outcomes without flexibility. If the system is too strict, teams are constrained and the results are rigid and dull.
- Design Docs at Google industrialempathy.com
One of the key elements of Google's software engineering culture is the use of defining software designs through design docs. These are relatively informal documents that the primary author or authors of a software system or application create before they embark on the coding project. The design doc documents the high level implementation strategy and key design decisions with emphasis on the trade-offs that were considered during those decisions.

- What are "Flexible Visual Identities" + Will They Replace Logo-centric Design? | | Eye on Design eyeondesign.aiga.org
A static, logo-centered visual identity is like someone who shouts the same message over and over again. A flexible visual identity on the other hand is a bit more eloquent.
Moving. This one word sums up everything New York-based design studio DIA embodies. Movement is in the neoteric, kinetic identity systems it creates and the processes it uses to construct them. Moving forward is in the ethos that drives its leaders Mitch Paone and Meg Donohoe to redefine with graphic design is. DIA is always moving and, in turn, its solidified itself as the master of typography in flux. It’s a studio which messes with design theory only to improve it, leaving the rest of us scrambling to catch up.
