For such a young, supposedly-innovative industry, I’m often amazed at what people choose to treat as immovable, unchangeable, carved-in-stone issues. Bloated, invasive ad tracking isn’t a law of nature. It’s a choice. We can choose to change.

There are some interesting (and surprising) performance implications of using CSS animations that aren't widely known.

This survey downloaded CSS files from over 8,000 domains and aggregated some data about how CSS is being used and written. I think this can be useful to drive conversations forward about how to organize, think about, and manage larger CSS projects, as well as to look at how the web is evolving.

There is clearly a negative correlation between file-size and the amount of filesize you save by minifying and gzipping compared to just gzipping. As an HTML document gets bigger minifying makes less of an impact. This is consistent with the way gzip works, the further the tokens from each other the less efficient the compression is.
Ultimately it looks like gzip eats html documents for breakfast whether you minify or not. I would say this is a self-confirmation of my original gut feeling: I would not trade minified html for even one minute of lost productivity due to some subtle bug introduced in the build process.

What we need [instead] is to deliver the minimum CSS required to make the page layout viable. It's impossible to provide one size fits all guidelines as different sites will have different needs. However, this baseline CSS is likely to include the core typography, colours and layout.
I appreciate this isn't easy - it's not something you are likely to be able to do with a Grunt plugin, you are going to have to have an in-depth understanding of your visual design and your CSS and how the two are interrelated. You will need to know what is the absolute minimal core of your visual design and how that is described by CSS. From this you can deliver the CSS that describes this core and the enhanced CSS that completes the visual design.
